Design handoff

Design handoff is the point where finished design work passes to the people who will build, run or extend it, with the files and guidance they need.

Area

Framer and Webflow building

What it means in practice

Handoff has two common meanings. The first is designer to developer. The designer shares Figma files, specs, components and assets, and the developer builds from them. Figma’s Dev Mode, design tokens and well-documented components make this smoother.

The second is studio to company. At the end of a project, the in-house team takes over the brand or website and has to keep it consistent. That handoff covers source files, guidelines, CMS training, templates and clear notes on how things are meant to work.

Handoff works best when it’s planned from day one. Files organized for someone else, sensibly named components and a CMS the team understands all cut the support needed after the project ends.

Why it matters for B2B and AI teams

A lot of design value leaks out at handoff. A strong identity gets applied inconsistently because nobody knows the rules, or a website stops being updated because marketing finds the CMS confusing.

B2B and AI teams ship fast, and the brand and site have to keep up after the studio leaves. A good handoff lets the team publish pages, decks and campaigns without waiting on outside help. That’s often worth more than any single page in the project.

How we approach it

Handoff + Track is the last stage of the BRIGHT Method, our process: Baseline → Resolve → Identity → Go-Live Surfaces → Handoff + Track. At handoff we transfer files, access and guidance, record acceptance, and measure only what was scoped.

What gets handed over depends on the scope. For OpaqAI, we designed four pages and OpaqAI’s team built the site. For Tithe, a pre-launch iOS focus app, we went from kickoff to a handoff-ready Figma file covering 35 screens in six weeks. For Peak3, we designed and built the site in Framer, and planned the handover around the team’s ongoing use of the CMS.

FAQ

Access to the platform account, a walkthrough of the CMS and key components, notes on templates and sections, and a list of anything that needs a developer.

Logo files in vector and raster formats, color values, font names and licensing details, the Figma source, guidelines and any templates made during the project.

That depends on your agreement, so check what’s included before the project starts. A clear handoff should cover everyday updates without outside help. With us, anything outside the agreed scope is quoted before it starts.
