The noun that picked your competitors

The noun that picked your competitors

Sync’s founder, Nikos Drandakis, once booked a white Peugeot. A black Skoda showed up. The rental industry has two words for that experience: “or similar.” So he built a company where you choose the exact car, a local provider delivers it to your door, and nothing gets held on your card.

When we started Sync’s brand work this summer, the offer was never the problem. The problem was the first line people read about the company. The site’s link preview introduced Sync as a marketplace, and Nikos described the social feed as closer to a classifieds listing than a company you’d trust with your car keys.

Most founders in that position assume they have a polish problem. My view after this project: the word you use to describe what you are picks your competitors for you, and polish can’t rescue a comparison you’ve already lost.

What “marketplace” was doing

“Marketplace,” “peer-to-peer,” “car sharing.” All accurate. They explain how Sync works. They also file it next to every app where strangers rent things to strangers, and that shelf gets judged on one question: can I trust this? A mainstream renter was being asked to evaluate an unfamiliar way of renting before hearing a single reason to choose it. Fleet owners, who were starting to list alongside private owners, were being asked to put their name beside a classifieds feed.

So we moved the category. Sync is car rental in Greece. That decision did more to the brief than any moodboard. The benchmark for finish became Avis, Hertz and Sixt, a much higher bar than other marketplaces, and the message came straight from the service: the car you selected, delivery to your door, no deposit hold. The provider model didn’t vanish. It moved to the places where people need it explained.

Where it showed up in the design

Once the comparison was set, the identity calls got easier to defend. We kept the pink from Sync’s app and changed its job, from wallpaper to accent on calm neutrals, because the brands Sync now stands next to don’t shout. One type family that handles Greek headlines first. A rounded window, taken from a car’s side mirror, that frames real cars and real providers with no brand filters over the photos. Look established, speak personally.

The best line in the system came from their side. Customer reviews kept describing Sync by what was missing: «χωρίς», without. Alexis, who runs their social, turned that into «Χωρίς γκισέ, χωρίς χαρτούρα». No counter, no paperwork. That line only lands because Sync is now standing next to the counter.

Commercial results will take time to read as the rollout continues, so I won’t dress this up as a growth story. What changed is the starting point for every surface the team touches.

The so-what for founders

Open your homepage title, your LinkedIn tagline and the first slide of your deck. Ignore everything except the noun that says what you are. Write down the three companies a buyer would compare you with based on that noun alone. If those aren’t the three you want to beat, that’s your brief, and it comes before anyone opens a logo file.

If you want a second opinion on yours, reply with the noun and the three names you wrote down.
